Help With new Dunelm Ceiling Light Fitting

by Susy3036 » Thu Aug 22, 2019 4:59 pm

Hi, my husband and I have just bought a house and are new to DIY. We want to replace the light in one of the bedrooms with a new light fitting from Dunelm. After switching off the electrics we removed the existing light and junction box from the ceiling. There is one cable with 3 wires - the casings are red, black and yellow/green. However the new light fitting expects there to be 4 wires in the household wiring, of which the live wire does not get connected to the light fitting. Of the 4 they expect one to be a switch wire. Is our red live wire the same as the switch wire? Can we connect our red to the brown of the new light?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can connect existing red to the new brown wire.

You are lucky you only had one cable, usually, there are 3 cables for lights, each cable has 3 cores. (9 wires in total) when you come across one, mark each one with an indelible pen and take lots of in focus pictures. (Saves hassle latter)
