Hi all,

In the main bathroom at our house we have a 230V & 115V toothbrush/shaver charger. When using the 230V slot with our Oral B charger (220-240V) it charges extremely slow, virtually not charging it at all really. Its definitely not the charger as we have used this with an adapter in a mains plug in the house.

Is there anything that can be done to test that the bathroom charger is working correctly?

Shaver sockets are limited to 200 mA some are intermittent rated shows a picture of shaver and some are continuous rated with picture of tooth brush, there is often a switch which activates the transformer only when the shaver is plugged in.

If not continuous rated it may be switching off then on again as it over heats, the idea was to power a shaver while being used, any rechargeable item can be clearly charged out of the bathroom. The early ones were never designed to charge things, but since I have been old enough to shave, there have been cordless shavers, and the early ones would often run out of charge, so since the 70's we have been using bathroom shaver sockets to charge with.

However often you would see a discoloured centre bit where they had clearly over heated, so models were made designed to be used with rechargeable shavers, but tooth picks were rated 300 mA so would not work in British bathrooms, so we had a battery backed version for the UK to keep the power down to 200 mA.

However have seen grey imports where they do use more than 200 mA.

As ericmark said, most shaver sockets are designed for shavers, NOT to charge toothbrushes.

The one shown below clearly has a toothbrush icon, to indicate it CAN charge a toothbrush. If yours does not have such an icon, as said it is not designed to charge a toothbrush.



If it helps, a lot of people assume that because a plug fits, it should work.
