Getting the right electrical appliances for Zone 2 in a bathroom. Ask questions and find answers to many subjects relating to electrics and electrical work

I'm refurbishing our bathroom and as part of this I am replacing the extractor fan and the shaver socket (both 35 years old now!)

Not all suppliers give the British Standards or Ingress Protection for their products, which makes selecting one, near impossible.

Can anyone guide me towards the correct BS and IP ratings for appliances in Zone 2 of a bathroom?

701.512.2 External influences
Installed electrical equipment shall have at least the following degrees of protection:
(i) In zone 0: IPX7
(ii) In zones 1 and 2: IPX4.
This requirement does not apply to shaver supply units complying with BS EN 61558-2-5 installed in zone 2 and
located where direct spray from showers is unlikely.
Electrical equipment exposed to water jets, e.g. for cleaning purposes, shall have a degree of protection of at least IPX5.

In the main we look for manufacturers to say suitable for bathrooms, today all items in a bathroom need RCD protection, this is in the main as requirement for bonding has been relaxed due to use of plastic pipes.

Zone 2 is only 600 mm so personally I would not fit an extractor or shaver socket in zone 2. And at 2.25 meters from floor, in the main lights are mounted too high.
