has anyone any ideas of how to get an aerial cable from the loft down the cavity wall. I tried joining the new one to the old cable and pulling it through, however the two came apart when the cable got stuck. now I don't seem to be able to feed anything down.

If its a stud wall with horizontal dwangs in it, you've virtually no chance of being able to feed a cable down through the holes on its own.

If your lucky try feeding something like an extending tape measure down. Hopefully the holes in the dwangs are big enough to get the tape through but its pot luck.

The only other way is to make cuts in the plaster board (assuming its not lath and plaster) around the dwangs so that you can see where they are and either cut a notch into the dwang or find the existing holes and use them.
Its a slow and painful method, plus you have to patch the wall once your done.
