Replacing plug socket

On our landing we have one of those plug sockets that are "on" the wall rather than "in" it, not sure what theyre called. Anyway, the plastering behind it is falling apart, and it keeps coming away from the wall.

Would it be possible for me to just chisel a square hole where the plug sits and put one of those metal inserts in and fit a normal plug fascia?

Thanks
