help im tryin to replace light switches all over the house but most of the old switches only have two wires not three in the single switch, and the two ways only have four not five? how do do i get round this.

Might be wrong but it seems like you are trying to replace one way switches with two-way. If this is the case then (for one-way lighting) ignore the L2 connection.

Where double switches are used live from single way switch can be bridged to two way switch giving 4 instead of 5 wires. But single way switches will have two wires why would there be three? I am not counting earth wires.
