cable routing

By agreement with my electrician (who is temporarily not contactable) I am running the cables for a new immersion heater and electric radiators on the first floor and he will then check and make the connections. It is an old two storey cottage and for several reasons I do not want to run cables in the void between floor and ceiling. This leaves the options of taking the cables up into the roof space and down again where they serve the units or running them in trunking round the walls at first floor level. I prefer the former from a practical and appearance point of view but are there any restrictions on doing this? If instead you would go for the horizontal trunking approach, can this be at floor level in the form of a purpose made mdf skirting duct?
