Possible Causes of Lighting Failure?

Hi, I have a problem I'm trying to fix myself but have reached a dead end. Here's what's happened
I had a long fluorescent light in the bathroom. One day it started fizzing and eventually blew up
I turned the power off, removed the fitting and installed a new one, not a flouro, just a regular one. By removing the old one I was left with a Live and Neutral wire coming from the ceiling
Once fitted, I flicked the mains power back on and the corresponding fuse blew in my fuse box
I turned the power off, replaced the fuse wire (5 amps) and removed the bulb from the new fitting
I flicked the power back on and everything was as it was, all the lights worked fine, except the new one which had no bulb. SO I tried the new light again by flicking the power off and replacing the bulb
When I turned the power on again this time EVERY light in my house went dead. Even though upstairs and down are on 2 different circuits and each have a different fuse
I checked the fuse wire on the 2 corresponding fuse box plug thingies and they were both fine. All the other electrics in the house work fine, the wall sockets and what not
The new light fitting is no longer installed and the red and black wires have been taped up safely
Any ideas how I can fix this without getting a sparky in? Thank you
