6 inch posts

Hi, i'm building a decking area in my garden which is elevated, free standing and on a slope. I have bought some 6 inch posts for the legs, I have dug some 2 foot deep holes for the posts and just wondered if they were deep enough. hope you can help simon

Hi Simon, It all depends on the stability of your slope, the soil type, and if you intend to anchor your deck to an existing structure- like the rear of your house etc.
If the soil is sandy and light in consistancy I would take your found holes down to 800mm. If the slope is very steep then again you should increase the depth.
Make certain that you include sufficent diagonal cross braces between your posts to stop the whole structure leaning away from the slope once a load- ie. you and your guests start to use the deck. This is vital if the deck is not anchored to an existing structure.
