Which nails to use to fix trellis to fence panels?

by johnh » Mon Apr 16, 2007 10:11 pm

I have 11 fence panels that are about to have trellis fixed to each one. I am going to fit each trellis to the horizontal boards of each fence panel. The fence panels are made up of several vertical feathered boards held in place by 3 horizontal thick brace boards. I shall fit 3 vertical batons to the top 2 horizontal boards and then fit the trellis to the 3 vertical batons. A centre baton and another at each end. Which nails should I use to hold everything together for 'a long time' ?

WE would suggest screwing the trellis rather than nail it John. Screws should be long enough to go into the fence timber three quarter way, ie if the fence timber is 25mm thick the screw should be long enough to go through the trellis and into the fence by 18mm. See the link for Screws.

Thank you doc. I have trawled my Screwfix catalogue and found Timber Decking Screws, which would seem to be the answer to my quandary. :)
