Replacing Roof Terrace Decking With Chippings

Hi looking for some advice
I have a roof terrace that is currently 3/4 decking and 1/4 tiles.
The decking needs replacing but I currently don't have the money to do this.
Here's my question. Can I remove the decking and put chippings down for a couple of years while I save up for decking.
