removing slate tile flooring

We moved two years ago into a house that has black slate tile flooring in our tiny extension kitchen and back room (previous owners used as a dining room, we use as a family room). Today I have swept the floor x3 as it shows up EVERY single bit of dirt. Both myself and my learning to walk 10 month old son have also stubbed our toes frequently on the uneven, badly laid tiles and I've had enough. How do I go about removing the floor? It seems to have been laid on some kind of wood panelling (sub floor?) on top of the floor boards. Would you recommend professionals to take it out or is it easier than it looks? Help before I take matters into my own hands. Thanks!
