Solid Oak Flooring

I want to lay 120mm wide solid oak flooring planks by either nailing or screwing to an existing wooden floor. Everyone says to leave a 15mm expansion gap around the perimeter of the room and to cover this gap with beading or by re-fitting the skirting. If the new flooring is fixed to the old, is there a need for the expansion gap?

Thanks for any useful tips.
