Help with kitchen flooring

Help help.
We have laminate flooring in our kitchen that has been laid prior to the units being fitted. The laminate is very worn now and we would like to replace this. Ideally we would like to replace with ceramic or stone tiles but have been told that the only way to do this is to have the units and worktop removed. This is a very expensive option so thought perhaps to replace the laminate with better quality laminate that is much more suited to kitchens. Will we have to remove the old flooring or can this be laid on top. The other question is how do we fit the laminate. Do we take up to the edge of the unit??
Thanks
