I want to lay a laminate floor in my living room. At present I have a good level surface of a cord carpet laid on flooing chipboard. Is there any reason why I shouldn't lay the laminate floor on top of this, rather than taking up the carpet first?
Advice will be appreciated.

I can understand if you want to save money but in the long term it will cause you problems, although it is a short cord carpet there will be to much movement and this is likely to effect the joints. You really want to buy the right underlay for the job. You can get a thin rubber based underlay which will reduce noise and aid against heat loss.

hope this helps
