Removal of tile to lay laminate

I'm purchasing a house where the previous owner has put down tile floors in the main room. I would like to pull them up and replace them with laminate. Because the subfloor is a single piece of 3/4 inch plywood, I don't want to pull it up and replace it. What can I do to easily remove the remaining mortar after I pull up the tiles before putting down laminate? Would a sander work?
