Fitting shower tray on sloping wooden floor

Hi
I need to lay a shower tray on a wooden floor (floorboards) which is not level. If I seal the gaps between the boards and shutter the area can I use a self levelling compound to get a level base. Some years ago I removed a shower from an en-suite where they had done so using what looked like undercoat plaster. Is the best thing to use?
Thanks
