Painting or Staining Floor Boards and Filling Gaps

Afternoon
I am now at the point of decorating the house, that I can turn my attention to the floors.
They are original floor boards, which I am going to sand and either stain or paint.
Do I have to fill in the gaps between each floor board first ? if so what is the best filler or can I use any wood filler ?
