Channeled Baseboard Removal in Japanese Cabin

I'm fixing up a 50 year old cabin in the north of Japan and have come across baseboards that I've not seen before. They have a channel about 15mm deep through the centre where the walls (mostly wood paneling) slot into. Because of this I'm unable to just remove them as I would normally. Would appreciate any advice on how to get them off without hurting the walls. Thanks in advance...
