Gaps Between Painted Floorboards and Cracks Appearing

Hi everyone,
We are doing up an old house and have painted our floorboards (straight edge, not tongue and groove) white to lighten up a dark room. We have also filled the gaps with draughtex or filler to stop draughts and keep the heat in.
Cracks have begun to appear in the floor where the paint has cracked between the floorboards. Does anyone have any advice on how to keep the gaps filled in a way so the paint will crack less and we can maintain a smooth look?
