Coir matting over laminate floor

Hi,
I have a laminate floor in my hallway, and I want to install a coir entrance matt that will run the whole width of the hall from wall to wall. Easiest way for me is just to cut the matt to size and lay ontop of the laminate floor with a strip of wood trim at the front edge of the matt to make it look nice and tidy. The matt is pvc backed, however I am wondering if this is enough to prevent moisture / water from getting under the matt and damaging the laminate floor, or if I should lay a membrane between the matt and the laminate. I can also cut the laminate away and recess the matt, however I prefer not to spend the extra cost on tools to do a nice job cutting the laminate, also I figured if the matt is laying on top of the laminate it would be easier to remove and clean it if necessary. Any thoughts?
