Currently preparing my old dining room for my new kitchen to be fitted in a few weeks (all part of major house renovations). On lifting old carpet (laid by previous owners) I have discovered lovely wooden floor boards that will come up a treat when sanded varnished etc.
My question is can I do this in a kitchen? I know that if I were to buy hardwood flooring this cannot be laid in a kitchen/bathroom.

There ius nothing whatever to stop you doing this in a kitchen Anne. Obviously timber stains when it gets wet and should there be any kind of "flooding" in the kitchen the water will get through the boards to (presumably) the void underneath but these risks, in our opinion are worth taking for a real wood floor. You may find that the carpet was laid because of the draghts coming up from underneath. If this is the case, see our project on filling gaps in floorboards.
