Moved into our flat 3 months ago and just discovered the washing machine has been leaking, possibly the whole time, straight underneath the laminate floor which hadn't been laid under the washing machine. Pulled up all the laminate in the kitchen and the soggy chipboard-type underlay underneath.

The main problem is that the kitchen comes off the sitting room - and I am worried the water has spread into there. Pulled up a small bit near the kitchen door and the laminate and underlay is dry, however in this room we have discovered there is plastic sheeting under the underlay. It feels wet between the sheeting and the concrete. Does this matter? Do we need to pull up the whole lot or will it dry out itself? Will it spread further or cause any damage?

Please help!!

If the water has leaked under the plastic sheet (damp proof membrane) then you should be ok. This assumes the membrane is not damaged.

Get onto your insurance company they will send someone out to assess it.
