I'm putting in a trenchfill foundation, and as the ground slopes, I have to put steps in. can anyone explain how to fix the boards in place to make the steps?

Cut pieces of ply the same width as the trench, fit the pieces in place and drive pegs diagonally into the sides of the trench to hold the ply in place.
