plastic drainage pipes in concrete footings - does the pipe need protecting?

I'm hoping that someone can give me a little advice. We have been dropped in it a little by an unreliable landscape gardener.
The builders of the newish estate we live on installed a large diameter plastic pipe connecting a gutter down pipe (from garage roof) to the drain. We are in the process of building a retaining wall in the garden and the pipe cuts across the trench (roughly half way up the depth of the trench) where we were going to pour concrete.
before we get carried away over the weekend I wondered if anyone with more experience than me could advise if the pipe needs some form of protection from the concrete (weight or otherwise) and if so what is recommended?
Thanks in advance
Andrew
