Can I Build on an Ex-Quarry Landfill?

I'm a layperson with no building experience.
I would like to purchase land to build a house on. I have seen a plot for sale that has been on the market for a while. It is an ex quarry that has been filled, I think with rubble and not organic waste. The plot seems to have been filled higher than its original level and there are still other quarries around it. I'm considering buying it to build on but wonder if this would be a mistake. Can you build on ex quarries and can this cause big problems with foundations and subsidence? Any advise would be very much appreciated.
