French drain construction without pipe

Hi, Just after some general advice please. Looking at the diagram posted on this site regarding the construction of a 'french drain' (without a pipe). It mentions that you should use 'graded' stone, circa 20-40 mm in diameter and fine shingle - 2/3rds and 1/3rd respectively, then 150mm of topsoil. I am assuming 'graded' stone is also 'washed gravel'? Also, would 10mm be OK to use as the 'fine shingle', if the 'graded stone' was 20mm? Hope that made sense, just trying to get my head around all the different terminology, which sometimes means the same product. Cheers in advance.
