inspection pit

How do I fill in a concrete inspection pit in my garage? It measures about 3 feet wide, 12 feet long and is 6 feet deep. The bottom is usually about a foot deep in water. Can I just fill it with builders rubble and then cement it over?

Hi Alexandra,
I have the same question. Did you decide what to do? Why did you want it filled? We are converting our garage into a living room and I want to know what to do with the pit.

Hi Jeffrey!
After all sorts of different advice, in the end we filled in the pit with mountains of rubble (we were having the old patio and garden paths dug up so all that went in!), then poured gravel in to fill in the gaps (until we got bored with shovelling it!), then a membrane of thick plastic and concrete poured and smoothed on top of that. It's been done for 6 months now and the result is still a perfectly smooth flat floor, no damp, no problems.
