Gas Fire Venting

I am looking to buy a new gas fire to replace an old one, the new one will fit flush with the wall. A lot of the fires we like indicate they need venting. Does this mean the room needs a vent on an outside wall or is there some sort of vent required on the fire?

Thanks
Colin

The manufacturers instructions will tell you if any purpose made ventilation is required.

Gas fires with a heat input of 7kw or below do not require any ventilation.
7kw> do require ventilation.

DFE (decorative fuel effect) fires require 100cm2 purpose made ventilation.

To work out the ventilation required for open flued appliances, you take the

(Heat Input) - 7 x 5 = ventilation required

7 is the 7cm2 adventitious ventilation is allowed for in every room, this is provided by tiny cracks around doors and windows etc this is why a gas fire of <7kw does not require any ventilation as 7(cm) - (7kw) = 0
