I have just bought a marble fire surround which when in place sticks out from the chimney breast approx 3inches all the way round as i am having a gas fire fitted i need to make sure the gap is filled and sealed what would be the best way to seal it?

I have been told to use wooden peices and sealant but this does not sound very safe to me could someone advise please
many thanks Paul

cement should be sufficient all the way around the outside of the marble and the inside of the fire opening between the wall and the marble.

Use an intumescent fire retardant sealant inside the surround. Outside against you can use anything you like really. Just make sure you can decorate it afterwards - ie don't use bathroom silicone or frame sealant.

Do you mean that the fire surround has a 3 inches gap all round from the chimney breast or that the surround is three inches thick?
