Fire smells of gas Information, help and advice on many gas related subjects from gas fires to domestic appliances

I have a Flavell fire that is now 18 months old. Since installation there has been a smell of gas around the control valve swtch. Flavell could not identify the problem but replaced the valve after around 5 months however the smell has persisted.

The fire has just been serviced again and again the Engineer could not find the source of the gas smell.

Any ideas what may be the cause before I tackle Flavell again

Did the enginner do a pressure test?
And what was the result?

Pressure test carried out and measured 20mb

You say the engineer could not find the source of the gas escape and presumably left gas escaping into the premises. I would have doubts about this engineers credibility. Did you confirm he was registered. If he proved to be then the Gas Safe Register should be informed of this situation. If he was not registered then he should not have been allowed to go near the appliance in the first place.
You are advised to isolate the appliance untill the leak has been identified and repaired.

ktitley - they mightn't have a gas leak on the meter, and pipework up to the appliances. But carrying out a tightness test does not test the appliances after the control valve - so you cannot say they do not have a leak.

If I went to a job with a gas leak, yes you do a tightness test, but you have to check the appliance thoroughly too.
