Gas Supply Pipe Protection

Hi all you Gasmen/fitters.
Simple question! I hope!
Just about to purchase property been around it had a good look. I noticed that the gas supply connecting to the boiler on the external wall. Has been painted looks like whitewash. But this is starting to peel away and expose the copper pipe, remember this is on the outside wall! My current property's gas supply pipe looks to be well protected with a black type of bitumen paint, sort of stuff?
The question is should this copper pipe on new purchase be protected by anything.
Regards and thanks for any advise.

Its a good idea to paint an external copper pipe.It will give it some protection from the elements, but I'd paint it with a gloss paint to match the drainage pipes etc. The gas pipe going into the building through the wall needs to be protected with a sleeve where it goes through and sealed on the inside. i.e. If its a 22mm copper pipe, sleeve it with a short length of 28mm copper pipe
