Removing upstairs Be chimney, but downstairs has a gas fire.

Hi, I want to remove a chimney from an upstairs bedroom but the room underneath has a gas fire fitted into the same chimney which runs down to the both rooms. My question is, once the upstairs chimney has been removed and a RSJ fitted to support the outside chimney how far into the room would a flue pipe intrude and would it need to be surrounded by brickwork or can we use another material. Cheers.

crazy talking, you are pretty much going to have to change or remove your fire downstairs - might be worth checking if you can have a balanced flue model fitted or a lot of people just put in an electric fire for the look. cheers
