Removing edging tape from Double Glazed Units

Is it ok to remove the tape from the edge of a double glazed unit?

My joiner made a template for double glazed units to fit timber casements.

The units have arrived and lo and behold they don't fit lengthways but do side to side.

He has clearly made a mistake and admits that he has allowed for 2 mm clearance! I've always allowed for 5 mm.

I saw one of the units and the dimensions attached show that the length of the unit to be exactly the that of the casement rebate.

The joiner says part of the problem is the tape around the edge of the unit and that this can be removed - I'm not so sure.

Even so I think it will be too tight and the units will pinch.

He has also mentioned putting a trough top and bottom to aid fitting but I'm not keen.

Please advise

It's fine to remove the tape, it's mainly something that customers request to help when handling. As for the joiner putting a trough top and bottom, sounds a bit naughty to me. The unit must sit on plastic blocks 3 -5mm ideally. Why should you pay for a new window only to have bits off it removed
