We currently have leaded double glazed wooden windows and would like to change the glass to clear. Understand we won't require any permissions to change the glass but wondered how easy this is to do. We think there might be a tool we could buy/hire to get the glass out without breaking it?

If they are puttied in you will have to hack out the old putty and will probably break the DGU in the process.
Have you tried scraping off the lead strips - they are only stuck on.

Thanks but unfortunately these DGU are leaded on the outside and also believe it or not between the glass (in the sealed unit!), so although we can take the outside off it wouldn't solve the problem. Most of the DGU units are blown anyway so we have to replace those.

The DGU units are nailed in so we really want to find the tool that you use to remove them safely - just need the name really. We want to replace the glass not the frames - just don't want to break all the glass.

try using a small hammer with a plastic packer placed where the hammer will come against the glass pane/unit to remove the pins..the face of the glass is pretty tough you know its the edges thats fragile try never to let the side of your putty knife / stanley knife come in contact with the edge whilst trying to remove the glass from the frame buy a plastic paddle from any glazing business to help prise out the glass good luck
