Insulating Internally in Circa 1850 Solid Rubble Stone Property Query

by needtoknow » Wed Nov 20, 2013 11:10 pm

Hi,
I'm new to the forum so be gentle...
I've read some of the insulation threads sort of relevant but not quite so here goes....

we have a circa 1850's 700mm solid 'rubble stone' house (not dressed stone) this has been pebbled dashed back in the 1970's. It's built on solid/shale rock. Does have some rising damp which hopefully will be remedied soon. The interior of the walls have been rendered - possibly at some time tanked as the 'plaster' is very 'hard'. We have tried to remove the render but it has pulled lumps of the rubble stone off so to remove is not an option the same goes for the plastered walls inside. So to remove any of the render/plaster to allow the walls to breath or to lime render is not feasible. We want to insulate on the inside (have looked at EWI but as far as we can see this can be expensive and if what has been done to a house in the village we wouldn't want that done on our house.) we are thinking of either using Marmox board 50mm and skimmed or 50mm insulated plasterboard, as space is at a premium.
Marmox advises to stick direct to wall no air gaps but not sure if Marmox has a good enough u value against using 50mm Celotex/plasterboard. Not sure how to fix Cel/board to wall and would a DPC be needed (if so can we use breathable roofing felt or does it have to be polythene or should we use that bubbled plastic specific for damp walls)
Any advise gratefully received,

you could fix battens to the wall and insulate in between with celotex board insulation, or sprayfoam in between, then plasterboard
