Fixes for Condensation Inside Fitted Wardrobe

It has been decided (by She Who Must Be Obeyed) that we need new fitted wardrobes. The current wardrobes were inherited from the previous owners and have a few worrying features:
1. The wall behind the wardrobe (an external west-facing flank wall) has been covered in polystyrene tiles. It also has a ventilation brick, possibly pre-dating the wardrobe.
2. The interior shelving has holes drilled into them, presumably for ventilation.

This all leads me to suspect there has been a condensation problem in the past. There has been no sign of condensation while we have owned the house.

When I rip out the old wardrobes should I take steps to insulate the rear wall before the new wardrobes are fitted? If so, what is the best method? Cavity wall insulation is not an option.
