Fitted wardrobes either side of chimney breast lacking insulation

We have two fitted wardrobes, one either side of the chimney breast, our clothes feel damp and our shoes have mould growing on them. The wardrobes were fitted when we bought the house so, short of ripping them both out and starting from scratch I need to insulate them somehow. There is a gap between the back of the wardrobes and the wall and I was thinking of cutting a hole, at the top and back-filling with vermiculite. The other option is to remove the backs and apply studding and insulated plaster board which is just short of ripping them out. Any suggestions will be most welcome. Cheers, Ken13

Hi ken13,
Even though there is a gap at the back this will be a stagnant area so try removing the kicker boards so there is a clear path for air to circulate.
