Plasterboarding bathroom ceiling?

I have to replace the plaster board on my Ceiling in my bathroom
the question i have is will i need to get it skimmed over ?
or can i fill the gaps and pain onto the boards in-stead?

depends if it was originally plastered, if it was you will need too, as there will be a step in the ceiling where the boards join up.
