Lining External wall for insulation

by johncollins » Tue Jun 23, 2009 2:08 pm

Hi,
I wish to line an external wall which is a solid wall.
My thoughts are:.
Batten wall, apply thermoline plasterboard. Will the space between battens need to be filled with extrra insulation and where shoud vapour barrier be placed. Between plasterboard and battens?
Secondly I thought of again battening the wall placing polystyreen between battens, applying vapour barrier and then use standard plasterboard.
As this is a solid wall what should I do regarding ventilation.

Starting at the end. Don't do anything about ventilation.
Stick polystyrene sheets directly to the wall.
You can buy ones with plasterboard already attached.
Any other system will add heat bridges to the wall that will ruin all your good intentions

johncollins,
Since the wall is solid it would unwise to insulate it without forming some sort of ventilated cavity to remove moisture which will come from direct penetration of the wall or condensation from within the building.
