Hello

first off, im almost a complete newbie with DIY.
but ive decided to fix a damaged wall caused by leakage in my house.
leakage is fixed but interior not.

ive open up the section and found rafters rotting and layers. plaster and paint.
im taking this fix slow. working on it once or twice a week.
so ive opened up the wall.

do i fix plasterboard to cover the hole now? or rip out the entire wall.

I doubt the timber structure has rotted completely - remove the damaged plasterboard, remove any timber which you can remove by hand, treat the remaining timber with a preservative, patch the remaining timber to give a sound base and fit new plasterboard.

It looks like you are working on an area directly under a sloping roof so if you can leave the existing rafters the job will be a lot easier. Only remove the badly rotted timbers (or parts of them) which will not be solid enough for overboarding. Most of the timber will be good enough to support plasterboard which should be fixed in place using screws - use longer ones where you go through soft timber.
