Hairline Cracks have Appeared in Newly Skimmed Wall - How to Fill These

by Raul_breganzo » Wed Oct 21, 2015 10:30 am

Hi

I have several hairline cracks on my newly skimmed (3 months old) walls and ceilings. What's the BEST way to seal them filler or caulk? Should I make the crack wider with a knife so the substance moulds in well????

Please advise and ASAP! Thanks in advance.

Regards, Raul

Any reasoning behind this please - mixed reviews everywhere!? Also, what about acrylic paint - does that help???

Hi

If you use caulk then this will be remain flexible and allow flexibility with the general movement of the house. Your house will move constantly, with different materials moving, expanding and contracting at differing rates depending on temperature, humidity etc…

It is likely that the cracks have appeared due to this.

By using caulk this will allow some movement and should hopefully prevent the cracks from appearing due to the same reasons in the future.

If you are painting the surface then you will also need to purchase a caulk that can be painted

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks, didn't see your response until now!
Yes, I have bought caulk which can be painted on. I have also bought this product as I've got a few hairline cracks (extremely faint) in different directions on my walls! I thought this product would help...?

Hi

Unfortunately I haven’t used that product before so cannot say 100% if it will do the job but from the description it looks as if it should.

The key is really as long as it is flexible and will move with any further movement of materials etc…. so that the cracks do not appear again

Kind Regards
