Hi
I am a weekend DIYer so my knowledge is a bit sparse to say the least !
I want to build a wall across an internal alcove about 6 feet wide. I have the timber for a stud frame ready to go ! But would have to set this back into the alcove to allow for the PlasterBoard depth.I am ready now to fit the Ceiling plate !

The question is how much do I have to set it back ? If at all and what tricks can I use to get the wall flush to the Existing wall ? Then there is the question of a seamless joins & finishing ! Presume I know very little ! Thanks !

the plasterboard should be set 3mm back from the finished plaster,
On the existing wall cut the finish plaster back about 75mm wide and 3mm deep. Then use some fibre tape or skrim as its called, to bridge the gap between the plasterboard and the existing plaster. Paint the gap and the existing plastered wall with a pva solution, and plaster

Hi

That is pretty clear just one thing ! What are the best tools to use to cut the existing wall back with ? Is it a Plaster Rasp ? Thanks !

Hi, If the existing wall is brick/plaster then you will need to use a sharp bolster chisel to cut back. There is a good 3 inch bolster here https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/DIY-superst ... 12357.html

This link will take you to the scrim tape too

If you go a little over the 3mm deep on the existing wall, don't worry. Paint with Pva and add a thin layer of skim plaster, then as this is dring out, add a little more. You can do this up to about 5mm. If you go any deeper than that (for example if you accidentally get back to the brick surface of the original, you can use this Polycell plaster repair tub.

If you are scared of the skimming, this stuff from Everbuild is amazing (take a look at the video I did on YouTube which is on the page below)

Fill and Skim - https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/DIY-superst ... e-tub.html

Hope that lot helps and if you have time it would be great to get an email telling us how you got on and even some pictures?
