Do Newly Plastered Walls Crack and Should They be Lined With Paper

Hi all,
We're getting our house plastered and and we just want a paint finish on it. However, some decorators and plasterers have said cracks may start to appear in the plaster even weeks after its done. Is it a good idea to leave the plaster bare and paint or would most people at least use lining paper-this seems expensive though. If it does crack in places is it easy for anyone to repair? Place was built in 1860's so quite old.
Thanks for the advice
