Applying SBR before scratch coat

I’m rendering a garden wall this weekend (concrete blocks 7n). It’s been suggested I paint an SBR coat on before applying the scratchcoat.
I use SBR in mixes but haven’t applied before the scratch before.
Reading the instructions it suggests a slurry mix of SBR, water and cement - is this right? If so, what quantities? The mix on the instructions means I’d use about 5ltr per 8m2 which seems like too much.
And, if I paint the slurry on do I still need SBR in the mix?
I’m planning on a 5:1:1 scratch (I like using lime in the mix).
