Suggestions on renewing bedroom walls (fill holes, skim, replace skirting board)

Hi all,

I am taking off the wallpaper(s) from the walls of my bedroom, and I’m looking for advice on a couple of things.

First, the walls have a few holes to be fixed: I can easily fill the small holes from nails/screws with some filler, but I am not sure of how to best approach the larger damages in the wall, as the one in the pictures attached: any suggestion on what products to use / guides on how to fix these holes?

Second, once I have cleaned off the wall from any residue of wallpaper, I was thinking of sanding it a bit, cleaning it with sugar soap and then skimming the wall using PVA first and then some premixed plastering product (as this for example: https://www.diy.com/departments/diall-f ... 575_BQ.prd).
Do you think that’s a good plan / should I look for different products / any other suggestion?

Lastly, I want to replace the skirting board as it’s quite old and damaged, but it is somehow “connected” with the door frame (again, see picture). What would be the best way of doing it? My plan was to remove the skirting board, skim the walls and then put on the new one, but I am afraid I might end up with a large gap between the skirting board and the door frame.

I also attach picture of the walls to give you an idea of the situation.

Cheers :)

Hi fraccalo,
Sugar soap is ok for non-porous surfaces I would not recommend it’s use on your wall because it will soak into the plaster. PVA has the same problem, if you are going to skim the walls use a plaster bonding agent these contain grit which helps adhesion. Fill the holes with a dry mix plaster which will set chemically. You will have to try the ready mixed plaster to see if you find it easy to use.
Your skirting board has been mitred on the top section and butted to the architrave on the lower flat part. You will have to find a matching ogee section.
Regards S

Hi stoneboy,
thanks a lot for your reply!
Do you have any suggestions for plaster bonding agent and plaster (even if not ready mixed) brands that you would recommend?
Building styles and materials here in UK are quite different from what I am used to back in Italy, so any suggestion is welcome :)
