new ceiling or overboarding?

Hi!

My ceiling has been damaged following a leak from the shower.
British gas came to fix the leak but had to cut a piece of the ceiling to access that leak.
I'm covered by my home insurance and the contractor, instead of replacing the entire ceiling, has told he would prefer to overboard the existing ceiling.
What's the best solution?
Thanks for your help
