plastering over painted surfaces

hello. when plastering on painted surfaces i found the plaster first coat to slip on the wall on the application. i applied pva neat as instructed but this did not provide the neccessary key to bond the plaster. i was advised to let the plaster to go off for 1-2hours pva 3-1 then apply the top coat. this worked fine as a remedy but too time consuming to be practical . i was told to key the wall roughly which i have done so . please can any one advise on the fastest process on plastering to painted surfaces or to be practical the less time consuming method . thankyou.
