can anyone recommend a good water softener for use in a very hard water area, is there a particular brand/type to go for? are the magnetic ones any good and how much should i look to pay minimum?

just bought a new bathroom suite and shower enclosure with lots of lovely chrome and very keen to prevent that ghastly limescale build up!!!!!!

It all depends on how much you want to pay for one. For a decent one they range from £90 up to £800 - £1000.

A magnetic one ? this is not a water softener it's a scale inhibitor.

Is it a softener you need ? or an inhibitor ?
Scale inhibitors vary in price too from £15 up

do you know if there is a unit that does both?

if not and i install a separate scale inhibitor, which should i put in line first - softener or scale inhibitor, or would it not make a difference?

Basically, the water softener does both, the scale inhibitor doesn't.

Found this on a site, may be of some help to you.

Hope this helps, I don't think you were thinking of your soft hair or silky skin (might interest the missus though ) it will protect your pipework and appliances.

at the rate my hair is greying its of no interest to me, but it will be a major selling point when justifying the cost to the missus!
