water hammer?

we have just started getting a bad knocking from the cold water pipe when we turn the taps off.This just seems to go up and down the pipes forever like a bad set of drums.We are fed off of a mains supply in a flat so have no tank involved.is this water hammer ?anyone got any advice?thanks (its really stressing us out!)

Hi arriell,

When you say 'just started' I assume you mean this has never happened before.

If you are mains fed then there is a likelihood that the water undertaker (supplier) may have adjusted the pressure which would have had a knock on affect with your pressure,

Turn your stopcock (should be under the kitchen sink?) down ½ a turn and see if there is a difference.

Phone your water undertaker and ask then if there has been a change in the pressure in your area.

hi skids thanks for your reply,we have just noticed our combi boiler is slightly leaking....could this possibly be the cause or just a coincidence?i presume if water can get out air can get in?sorry if i sound silly but just clutching at straws!
